What should you get a 12-year-old for Christmas?

By twelve, the wish list gets shorter, pricier and more specific. Ten toys turn into three things, and they can name the exact model of each one. That is good news for you: a short list is easier to get right.

The gifts that land at this age give them a little more say over their own life. The American Academy of Pediatrics says children aged 10 to 13 feel a growing need for privacy and start to explore ways of being independent. So think about their own space, their own photos and their time with friends: an instant camera, photo-clip lights for the bedroom wall, a bean bag chair, or a party game for the next sleepover.

Any 12-year-old may love any idea on this page, whatever the sign over the store aisle says. Start with what they already do for fun, then filter the list by that.

What are good gifts for 12-year-old boys?

A lot of gift lists for 12-year-old boys are mostly screens and sports. Some boys want just that, and this page has it: a gaming headset with a mic for playing with friends, a roundnet set for the park, or a VR headset on an account you manage.

Other boys want to cook, play music or make things, and nobody thinks to ask. A baking cookbook for young chefs, an electric guitar kit with a headphone amp, or a dot-grid journal can be the gift he is still using in March.

The best clue is where he spends his own money and free time. If both go to one game, the headset fits. If they go to snacks, the cookbook might win. Show only the music ideas, or see Christmas gifts for teens if he already acts thirteen.

Start with these five

  1. Gaming headset with a micFor playing with friends online
  2. Roundnet setTwo against two at the park
  3. Electric guitar starter kitQuiet practice through headphones
  4. Baking cookbook for young chefsFor the boy who raids the pantry

What are good gifts for 12-year-old girls?

Gift lists for 12-year-old girls often stick to jewelry, makeup and room decor. Some girls love those, and a few ideas here fit that wish: photo-clip lights, a bean bag chair, or the gentle skin-care basics that dermatologists suggest for her age.

Plenty of girls would rather have a rock tumbler, a chess set or an electric guitar. Twelve is a good age for a hobby with real tools: a compact camera with optical zoom, a 3D pen labeled for her age, or a beginner sewing machine for pouches and pillow covers she designs herself.

If you're not sure, look at what she saves, prints or pins on her wall. That tells you more than any store sign. Show only the making ideas, or find gifts for younger brothers and sisters in Christmas gifts for kids.

What are 12-year-olds usually into?

Friends, mostly, and the things that connect them to friends. Pediatricians at the AAP describe ages 10 to 13 as a time when kids feel watched and judged by their peers, want more privacy, and still see things in concrete, black-and-white terms. Expect firm opinions about which brand is fine and which one is embarrassing.

Phones are a big part of that. When Pew Research Center surveyed US parents in May 2025, about 60% of those with an 11- or 12-year-old said the child had a smartphone of their own. Over a third, 37%, said their 11- or 12-year-old used TikTok. In Common Sense Media's 2019 census, 69% of US kids had a smartphone by age 12.

So gifts that go with friends fit well: a tripod, a speaker, a party game. Gifts with no screen at all fit too, and that is where hobbies come in.

What are good gifts for 12-year-olds under $25?

Under $25 still buys plenty at twelve: 11 ideas on this list stayed below that line in our October 2026 store check. At this age, the small gifts that work best are ones they use every day without thinking about it: a plain alarm clock, a locker organizer kit, or a small waterproof speaker for the shower.

For a kid who already owns an instant camera, a twin pack of film may be the most welcome thing in the stocking. For one whose room is already full, a few succulents on the windowsill add something alive to look after.

Small gifts also suit a class swap or a cousin you drew in a family exchange. A drawing-and-guessing party game plays well at a sleepover and with grandparents on Christmas night. Show only the ideas under $25, or browse cheap Christmas gifts and stocking stuffers for everyone else.

Should a 12-year-old get a phone for Christmas?

It is one of the biggest asks at twelve, and the answer is a family choice. Pew's 2025 survey found that 68% of US parents of kids 12 and under think a child should generally be at least 12 before getting a smartphone, so many families have this talk the year their child turns twelve.

There are more than two answers. One maker sells a phone for ages 9 to 14 with parent controls built in, plus a monthly plan. A tablet on home Wi-Fi covers video calls with friends without a phone number. A VR headset is a screen to plan for too: Meta allows ages 10 to 12 only on an account a parent sets up and manages.

Most social apps set 13 as their minimum age in their own terms, and TikTok says 14 in Florida. If a phone does go under the tree, set up the controls and the family rules first, and tell them the plan when they open it.

Each app's own terms, checked October 2026.

How do you find out what a 12-year-old wants?

Twelve-year-olds often know exactly what they want and still say "I don't know" when a parent asks. Try a different question: what would they buy with $50 of their own? What are their friends saving up for?

Or let them tell Santa. On a video call with Santa on your own account, your 12-year-old talks with an AI video character who asks about their year and what they hope to find under the tree. It can be easier to list wishes for Santa than for a parent holding a notepad. Santa never promises that a gift will come.

After the call, their wishes come back to you with store prices, lowest first. Calls cost $1 a minute; see how a call with Santa works. If they'd rather type, the Christmas wish list maker has Christmas list ideas for 12-year-olds to start from. Shopping for grown-ups as well? Let Santa ask the grown-ups on your list.

  1. Sit together at the screenYour phone, tablet or computer, on your account. No app to install.
  2. They give Santa the short listThe three things, the exact model, the color. Santa asks, they answer.

Are skin-care gifts a good idea for a 12-year-old?

They can be, if you keep it simple. Some 12-year-olds ask for the same serums and creams that adults use. In an October 2025 guide for tweens, the American Academy of Dermatology suggests three basics instead: a gentle, non-abrasive cleanser, a fragrance-free moisturizer, and a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, used every day.

The same guide says tweens should skip products with retinol, vitamin C and exfoliating acids. Those names are on the label, so check the back of the box before you wrap anything from the skin-care aisle.

The nicest version of this gift is the routine itself: the three basics in a washable pouch, with a handwritten note on what each one is for. It feels grown-up to open, and it is gentle on young skin. If they are worried about breakouts, a doctor's visit will help more than any jar.

The three basics

  1. Gentle cleanserNon-abrasive
  2. MoisturizerFragrance-free
  3. Sunscreen, every dayBroad-spectrum, water-resistant, SPF 30 or higher

Which age labels matter on gifts for 12-year-olds?

At twelve, many gifts sit right on the line between kids' and teen products, so the label on the box matters. The Consumer Product Safety Commission's December 2025 holiday tips say to follow the age guidance on the packaging and to buy from sellers you trust.

Some examples from this list. One 3D pen maker labels its kids' pen 6 and up and its standard pen 14 and up, so pick the kids' one. The party game here says 10 and up. Meta lets 10- to 12-year-olds use its VR headset only on an account a parent manages. On the ESRB scale, Fortnite and Roblox are both rated T, which means 13 and up.

For anything with wheels, give a helmet with it. A hoverboard or an electric scooter should carry the UL 2272 safety certification, which the CPSC has asked every maker to meet. If you can't find that mark on the box or the listing, choose another one.

Labels to look for

  1. The age on the boxKids' and teen versions can look alike
  2. The ESRB letterT means 13 and up
  3. UL 2272On any hoverboard or electric scooter
  4. A parent-managed accountFor a VR headset at 10 to 12

What can grandparents give a 12-year-old at the last minute?

Grandparents often ask in December what a 12-year-old wants and get one word back. A gift card to the store or game shop they like works well, because choosing is half the fun. Under federal rules, the money on a gift card can't expire for at least five years.

An experience fits too: two movie tickets with Grandpa, a morning at a climbing gym, or a baking afternoon with Grandma and the cookbook.

Far from the grandkids this year? Grandparents can give the family gift minutes for calls with Santa, at $1 a minute. They finish with a gift card that carries a code and a short note from them, ready to print, keep as an image or share as a link. The parent or guardian types the code into the redeem page, signs in by email, and the minutes join their account. Minutes have no expiry date, and each code works once. For more grandparent ideas, see gifts for grandkids.

How do you keep a 12-year-old's wish list on budget?

Ask for the list early, then price it before you promise anything. A short list of exact models is easy to compare, and the same item can cost very different amounts. On October 16, 2026, one big US store listed the same five-book fantasy boxed set twice, at $33.49 and $45.31. Check the seller and the edition before you buy.

Santa's wish list does the comparing for you. After a call with Santa, each wish comes back with prices from several stores, lowest first. For a big item like a tablet or a camera, ask relatives to chip in on one thing rather than buying three small ones.

If the price drops after you buy, check the store's policy. Target, for one, matches its own lower price within 14 days of purchase. Then share your starred shortlist so nobody buys the same speaker twice.

Gifts for 12-year-olds: questions

Is 12 too old for toys?

No. Plenty of games and kits for this age are labeled 10 and up, like the party game on this list. Go by what they enjoy and the age on the box.

How much should I spend on a 12-year-old?

Whatever fits your budget. For scale, the National Retail Federation found shoppers planned $627.93 in 2025 gift spending across their whole list, not per child. Choose a band in the filter to match.

What do you get a 12-year-old who has everything?

Something to do rather than something to keep: a class series, concert tickets or a day out with you. See more gifts for someone who has everything.

Can my 12-year-old call Santa without me?

A grown-up (18+) runs every account and starts each call; your 12-year-old talks with Santa on that call. Santa doesn't remember past calls, so each one starts fresh. See how a call with Santa works.

Is the call saved?

A video is saved only if you tick the box to save it. It stays private until you share its link, and you can delete it any time.

Where is my shortlist kept?
